The shoreline sentinelโ€ฆ

"For this piece, I didnโ€™t want to just paint an oystercatcher; I wanted to paint that bold little heartbeat you find along Irelandโ€™s coasts. I hoped to capture the oystercatcherโ€™s fearless presence... a familiar flash of colour and character against sea-wind, stone, and tide."

Inspiration

This painting was inspired by one of my favourite sights on the Irish shoreline: an oystercatcher standing bright and unmistakable against the edge of the Atlantic. Thereโ€™s something so striking about them… the crisp black-and-white feathers, the vivid orange-red bill, and that confident way they move as if they own the tide line. You can spot them along Irelandโ€™s beaches, estuaries, and tidal flats, always busy, always watchful, like little guardians of the coast.

Birds are a common theme in my work because they carry a kind of freedom and instinct that we instantly recognise. They belong completely to their environment, responding to wind, weather, and rhythm without hesitation. The oystercatcher, in particular, feels like a symbol of Irelandโ€™s coastline itself: resilient, spirited, and full of character. Even the name hints at its world… these birds are coastal specialists, using that strong bill to search through sand and seaweed for food, perfectly adapted to the ever-changing edge where land meets water.

With this piece, I wanted to capture that feeling of standing by the sea and noticing a small life that feels utterly alive in the elements. Itโ€™s a painting about the wild familiarity of Irelandโ€™s shores… the salt air, the open horizon, and the bold, beautiful birds that make the coast feel like home.
