Along The Atlantic Edge

This painting was inspired by that unmistakable moment on Ireland’s coastline when you watch a group of surfers step from land into sea. Boards underarm, shoulders braced against the wind, they move as one towards the Atlantic… not because the water is welcoming, but because it’s calling. There’s something deeply Irish about that choice: to meet the elements head on, to laugh at the cold, and to let the ocean wake you up from the inside out.

With Along the Atlantic Edge, my intention was to celebrate our universal pull toward water. Whether you surf, swim, paddle, or simply stand at the shoreline and breathe it in, the ocean has a way of clearing the noise. It asks you to be present. It gives you that sharp, bright feeling of aliveness that only salt air and open horizon can bring.

At the heart of the piece is togetherness. Surfing can be solitary once you’re out beyond the break, but the ritual of going in is often shared: friends meeting at a car park, tugging on wetsuits, swapping nods and encouragement, and then heading out side by side. It’s a place where people come to move their bodies, feel the wind in their hair, and find freedom from the stresses of daily life… even for a single set of waves.
