Where the Rhythm Begins
Rhythm First...
"It’s impossible to ignore the rich rhythm of the guitar... and why indeed would anyone want to? Though initially you see a guitarist, this piece is also about the beauty of the everyday; the inescapable need for, and the joy found in the rhythm of life."
Kathryn Callaghan

Inspiration
This painting was inspired by the steady pulse of the guitar, that grounding rhythm that sits beneath a traditional Irish music session and quietly holds everything together. While the melody instruments lift and weave above, the guitar brings a calming, rich undertone, something you feel as much as you hear. With this piece, my hope was to capture that settling warmth… a sense of reassurance, of music that supports without demanding the spotlight.
Like the others in this series of eight Irish musical artists, it’s rooted in the lively and mesmerising trad music scene found across Ireland’s cosy pubs, where tunes are shared, repeated, and passed around with easy familiarity. The monochrome palette and faceless subject are intentional, leaving space for your imagination to take over: the expression of the player, the sound of the room, the moment in the tune when everything suddenly locks into place. I want it to feel like a doorway back to your own memories of sessions, where the guitar’s gentle drive made the whole night feel steady, intimate, and full of heart.
