Stirring the soul...

"Have you felt the power of a traditional Irish music session creep into your soul? The Irish drum, or bodhran, is the foundation of the session. Itโ€™s the solid, unwavering base. Thatโ€™s what this piece is about โ€“ strength and fortitude."

Inspiration

Is it possible to capture the rhythm and soul of Irish musical culture? A tall order, but thatโ€™s exactly what I set out to do with this piece depicting a traditional bodhrรกn player. The bodhrรกn is the heartbeat of a session: steady and quietly powerful, pulling the melodies together and giving the room a shared pulse. In the middle of laughter, conversation, and the lift of a tune, that base rhythm does something deeperโ€ฆ it gathers people in and turns a pub into a kind of togetherness you can feel in your chest. My hope is that this painting carries a little of that energy, stirring something familiar, like the memory of a night where the music made everything else fall away.

This work is part of a series of eight Irish musical artists, collectively inspired by the lively and mesmerising traditional music scene found across Irelandโ€™s cosy pubs. The monochrome palette and faceless subject are intentional, leaving space for your imagination to step in: the warmth of the room, the sound of feet tapping on worn floorboards, the nods between musicians as they listen and respond. Rather than capturing one specific session, I wanted this piece to feel like a doorway back to your ownโ€ฆ those moments where rhythm leads, the crowd leans in, and the music becomes a shared language.
