Double Dare
A double dare...
"Bluetits might be familiar, even mundane to some, but to me theyโre pure colour and characterโฆ especially in pairs, where every quick turn feels like a playful challenge. By building the birds in flowing ink and bright, lifted layers, I hoped to capture that zippy movement that always feels like an expression of joy."

Inspiration
This painting was inspired by one of my most familiar, most-loved subjects: bluetits in flight. I never tire of them. Theyโre small and commonplace enough to be almost overlooked, but when you actually watch them, those flashes of cobalt and yellow, the quick tilt of a wing, the playful darting between branchesโฆ theyโre anything but ordinary. With Double Dare, my intention was to honour that everyday beauty: the kind thatโs always been there, waiting for you to notice.
What I love most is how often bluetits appear in pairs, like tiny companions moving through the world together. Their flight is so zippy and spontaneous it feels like an expression of pure joyโฆ two sparks of colour daring each other to go faster, turn sharper, vanish and reappear in the same breath. In this piece, I wanted that sense of motion to feel alive: light, quick, and full of character, as if the birds have just burst into the air and youโve caught the moment mid-laugh.
