The Winter Stag

This painting was inspired by the intensity and elegance of the Irish stag, a creature that holds a rare balance of strength and stillness. I’ve always been captivated by that combination of power and grace: the sense that, even at rest, the stag is entirely alert, entirely alive. In this piece, my intention was to honour that presence and to reflect the wild, untamed natural world of Ireland. The stag stands as the undisputed “king of the forest,” through sheer command of the landscape it belongs to.

Set among layered forest foliage, the stag turns its gaze towards the viewer. There’s something unforgettable about locking eyes with an animal like this… an instant of connection that feels both intimate and untouchable. As you meet that steady stare, I hope it draws you back to your own memories of Ireland and all of its natural wonder, those green depths, that cool air, and the quiet thrill of encountering something truly wild.
