"When the street is full of craic and the atmosphere is good, life just gets a little more relaxing. This painting is intended to capture the energy of Irelandโs many cobblestone streets, laced with pubs and shops and ready for a grand day out with family and friends. Inspiration
This painting was inspired by the unmistakable lift you feel in an Irish town when the streets are full and the day has a bit of celebration in it. I wanted to capture that sense of camaraderie and shared joy, where strangers feel like neighbours for a moment, and the ordinary becomes something vibrant and memorable.
At the heart of the piece is the hustle and bustle of an Irish Street, busy with people and full of life. The figures are not just part of the scenery, they are the soul of it, each one adding to the atmosphere and reminding us that the real charm of a place is always the people.
This painting was poured freestyle onto a prepared surface and built up in layers over time. The first layer began with a black, inky mix poured to create the foundation of the composition, essentially my drawing without pencils or a traditional sketch. The process is contactless, which means gravity and flow become part of the work, bringing their own natural movement. I guide the ink to where I want it to go, while letting the unexpected marks add character and a sense of spontaneity, much like a lively street scene that can never be fully predicted.
From there, colour is introduced through pouring, dripping and splashing with pipettes, then pushing and blowing inks and washes across the surface before they dry. This is where the feeling of the street comes alive, the bright, optimistic palette, the layered energy, and the lively contrasts that suggest motion, laughter, and the buzz of conversation.
As the layers build, so does the texture and depth of the surface. The mix of gloss and matte effects means the painting shifts depending on the light, revealing different details as the day moves on. Like a street that changes from morning to evening, it has moments that feel bold and bustling, and others that feel softer and more intimate, always holding onto that central feeling of togetherness and celebration.
